I yawned as I cut up some pancakes for Danny, who was already dressed and ready to go sit at the table. It had been rough getting up this morning and the only saving grace I had was knowing that I would be able to go back to bed within the next hour. I had carefully peeked in on Luke and was pleased to see that he was still sleeping. He was in desperate need of it. I had set his alarm for two this afternoon in case he didn’t wake up before then. I knew he wanted to get to Damon’s parents today and with it being a two-hour flight, even if he left at three, he would be there for five. It might not be when he wanted to be there for, but I stood by my original point that he needed to look human and not something dead the dog dragged in.

“Where’s Daddy?” Danny asked, as I placed her plate down in front of her.

“He is getting some much-needed sleep. I know he’s been very busy in the past few days. He had an emergency at work that he needed to help with. He has to go somewhere today, but he will be back tonight.”

I was hoping that after everything with Damon was handled that Luke’s schedule would go back to normal and Danny would get her father back.

“Is Daddy okay?” she asked, worried about what the emergency could have been.

“He’s fine. There was a bit of trouble at work with one of his employees, but everything has been sorted. He’s a bit tired and a little sad, but that is nothing that spending some time with you can’t fix,” I said with a warm smile.

It was hard deciding what to tell Danny because I didn’t want to upset her. I didn’t want her to know that someone had died, mostly because she was five and I didn’t want to risk triggering any feelings about her mother’s death. At the same time, I didn’t want her thinking that because Luke spent the day with her on Saturday that meant he had to work all of these crazy hours to make up for the time he lost. I didn’t know exactly what Luke wanted her to know so right now the best thing I could do was be vague and allow for him to fill in any of the gaps should he need or wish to.

“So Daddy will be here for dinner?” she asked hopefully.

“I’m not too sure on dinner, but definitely breakfast tomorrow. He has to go out of town today and I don’t know if he will be back in time for dinner. But for sure breakfast.”

I highly doubted he was going to be back before Danny went to bed, but I knew he was going to be here tomorrow. I just needed to get her through one more day with her routine being a mess before everything would go back to normal. She had done very well though with not having Luke around like he normally was.
